Travel health essentials before you fly

Whether you are off on a planned trip or a last minute city break, a few simple checks in the weeks before you fly will keep you well once you arrive.

Book your travel clinic six weeks ahead

Most travel vaccines need at least two weeks to work, and some courses, such as Hepatitis B and Rabies, are given over three to four weeks. Booking six to eight weeks before departure gives you the best protection.

Pack a sensible medical kit

A compact travel kit takes up almost no space and saves a lot of hassle abroad. We recommend the following essentials:

  • Paracetamol and an anti inflammatory
  • Imodium for traveller's diarrhoea
  • Oral rehydration sachets
  • Sun cream with SPF 30 or higher
  • Insect repellent containing DEET
  • Plasters and antiseptic wipes

Check your prescriptions

If you take regular medication, request your repeat at least a week before travel and ask us for a copy of your prescription to carry in your hand luggage. Some medicines are restricted in certain countries, so it is worth checking with us if you are travelling further afield.

Sort your antimalarials

If you are visiting a malaria region, the right tablets depend on the country and the time of year. Our travel pharmacist will recommend a course tailored to your itinerary at your consultation.
