Preparing for Winter Flu Season in Leeds

Every autumn we see the same pattern across our pharmacy in Harborne: a steady rise in coughs and colds from late October, then a sharp spike in flu cases from December into the new year. A little preparation now can save weeks of feeling unwell later.

Get vaccinated early

The flu vaccine takes around two weeks to provide full protection, so the ideal window in Leeds is mid September through early November. If you are over 65, pregnant, a carer, or living with a long term condition you are eligible for a free NHS flu jab. We administer them daily without an appointment.

Top up your vitamin D

Between October and March there is not enough UV in UK daylight for our skin to make vitamin D, which plays an important role in immune function. The NHS recommends a 10 microgram daily supplement for everyone during these months.

Build a winter medicine cabinet

A small home stock of basics means you do not have to leave the house when you are unwell. We suggest keeping the following to hand:

  • Paracetamol and ibuprofen for adults and children
  • A digital thermometer
  • Cough linctus and throat lozenges
  • Saline nasal spray
  • Oral rehydration sachets

Know when to seek help

Most winter illnesses can be managed at home, but call 111 or speak to your pharmacist if symptoms last more than a week, if you have difficulty breathing, or if a young child becomes drowsy or refuses fluids. We are here every day to help you decide on the right next step.

A five minute conversation with your pharmacist can save a wasted GP appointment, or sometimes a trip to A and E.
